13 Assassins (directed Takashi Miike, 2010)

not say that Miike is the best movie since Graveyard of Honor , but certainly the best since the Big Bang Love, Juvenile A . Well, not really, because half of the title after you have seen movies. But I have not seen, because I was afraid and this fear seems justified. And four years that these movies are divided, the eight paintings in Miike. There's nothing like workaholism. Well, but where this fear? Well, the surreal Big Bang Love ... Miike has happened to something bad. Admittedly since the beginning of his career, said that only a craftsman, but it did not happen a lot in common with the truth. Because an ordinary artisan would not be able to shoot so many different, yet so very homogeneous, highly specific films. Because Miike after several years of experimenting with a formula movie genre has earned itself a unique style (chaotic, but his own.) Was it a movie gangster, horror or musical - once it was clear who was responsible. There he also projects a purely commercial lines - as Missed Call or Great yokai War - but quickly come back for them to "underground roots." And after the Big Bang Love ... there was something really strange. Because Miike once again jumped into the ocean of commercialism, but deeper and longer than ever before. And - what's most surprising - has created a veritable caricature of his own style. Takashima Miike has become a version of the ultra-pop. Good boy kokietującym his old hooliganism. Ordinary artisan. After the screenings cukierkowatych Like a Dragon and Crows Zero, and even loud - better, but also throttling the mainstream - Sukiyaki Western Django, crossed out from a list of favorite directors. Another thing that happened to me in the meantime, the movie simply przejadło. Well, it seems that even kinomaniacy get older. Finally, when I saw the trailer curious Yattamana quite ceased to be interested in him. Miike is, whore, dead - I thought. But the Japanese is like a boomerang. I go in the trash, and he told me in the face of samurai film. A great samurai film, which proves that he did not over, but rather is born anew.

13 is a remake of the Assassins a forgotten classic from 1963, which he did not see, but I'll try to take some time to catch up. I would like to know how much good Miike took from the original, and if added to one another. Because a heap of good stuff here. I also wonder whether the original or a chambara more "noble" cinema under the sign of Kurosawa's samurai, and the company. Miike film, but the pain of grade, it seems to me to be something in between. Perhaps because of the epic nature that characterizes it, which was probably chambarze rule - due to the low budget - a stranger. Somewhere, sometime I came across the information that presented here events are based on authentic Japanese legend. Now, unfortunately, to do anything like that, I managed to get through. Why not bad looking, but found only information that the main villain of the film, Lord Naritsugu, a character who actually walked down the Japanese territory in the nineteenth century. Legend or not, the story of thirteen killers departing samurai against an army of two hundred, it seems to me not only more reliable but also more interesting than the stories of a few hundred thousand three hundred Spartiatach siekających army of King Xerxes. And what is the difference between a film about some people, a film about the others? The first is beautiful fairy tale, the second plastic. And, as he wrote a few months ago, a journalist, dead surgeon here than in more densely 300 and Kill Bill combined. Not only that, the battle for a movie from the early going, it takes about forty minutes. And in contrast with the works of Tarantino's just not bored for a moment, but lasts twice as long. Miike, like you did?

13 Assassins can be divided into three different parts. Places so very different, that the film seems to be the product of a little uneven. Initially, the story is told very slowly, but there is no mention of any bored. The reasons for departure in a suicide mission heroes are introduced very slowly. This is accompanied by dark, very disturbing atmosphere, and once in a while cruel, touching on macabre, paintings. The story itself is very simple: Lord Naritsugu psychopathic rebels against the reality of permanent peace, recognizing it - horror of horrors quite rightly - as a great danger for the future of the samurai. So, using his authority (and is the brother of the Shogun) murders and rapes at random, thus provoking further clans. Finally decided on the death sentence. Execution is to take an old, well remembers the times of great wars, the samurai. To perform it assembles a small force of warriors. I do not want to reveal too much, because although the film is characterized by simplicity said, is full of nuances. In any event, suddenly the darkness begins to replace a certain pugnacity and humor, which at the beginning of my mind. We learn more slowly killers to finally go to them on a dangerous journey. Which will end on a big, bloody battle. Onslaught of imaginative action scenes, very nicely graded, executed with verve, but the sensitivity.

In several places I felt that this title is what Sukiyaki Western Djang to have / could have been, had it not obvious lust for money, which he was fucked. Interestingly, the basis 13 Assassins is a unique paradox. This is because "all struggling for peace, until the blood is flowing," citing the punk classic. Apparently our squad thirteen warriors to fight moves due to the defense of justice and peace. In fact, it is more about (almost hidden) moral ambivalence, and therefore had some association with Wild Bunch Sam Peckinpah. Code of bushido, of course, is the most important characters, but the reason for the suicide mission is a thirst for blood. The samurai are warriors. The meaning of their existence was a constant struggle. The heroes embark on a fight, to die among the flying guts and severed limbs (not to say that this movie is completed and is in fact surprisingly little rough). Miike seems to say here that the road requires their heroic samurai, violent death. That, in fact, ice these great warriors were sentenced to such a kind of suicide. Moreover, as the end credits inform the first film, shogunate finally fell 20 years after the events described here. Miike pays homage to a completely unpretentious, and times, which says, and many other films that illustrate them years ago. And finally, thanks to a very conventional - and very successful - the theme, lets the viewers eye. He says, "Sure, it's a fairy tale. But what a wonderful, right?". True. There remains for me nothing else but wait for his next film, and it will be yet another remake of the classic samurai - Seppuku (!). Waiting impatiently I believe that 13 Assassins was really just a warm-up. Well, years ago, Miike - along zz Takeshima Kitano - breathed new life into the corpse of gangster movies. Is now set a target of jidai-geki refresh? I hope so.
